Taking a proactive approach

The 2017 meeting of the National Greenhouse Manufacturers Association (NGMA) occurred this past April in Savannah, GA, and it was a huge success. Our annual conference provides the opportunity to assemble as a collective group to discuss, collaborate, and educate our membership on topics that directly affect our industry.

During the conference, our membership heard an informative presentation from Dr. Charlie Hall on “The Past, Present, and Future of Green Industry Economics.” Also, Dr. James Rakocy gave an engaging presentation on the emerging aquaponics industry, and Damian Solomon from MedMen discussed the developing cannabis market and how various structures and growing systems are being utilized. Our speakers were well versed in their related fields and their presentations were informative to our members.

During this past year, our committees have been active in promoting the interest of the green industry. The Codes and Standards Committee has worked actively in updating the greenhouse definitions in the Energy Codes and IBC Building Codes. In addition, the committee has been updating the “Helpful Hints” documents on the NGMA website that will help assist growers with new code guidelines and regulations. The diligent work of the Codes and Standards Committee will allow the NGMA to continue to take a proactive approach in ensuring our green industry has a voice in establishing rules/policies within the building codes.

As we move forward, our attention will turn to the Energy Codes. Our influence in this area is vital to our industry. As an organization, we want to ensure that modifications to code guidelines will not have an adverse effect or place unrealistic demands on growers.

For 2017, our Communication Committee has plans to begin webinars on a variety of industry topics. These webinars will be hosted by NGMA members, and our goal is to educate attendees on industry-related “hot topics” and to promote the value of the NGMA and its membership.

Thanks to all NGMA members that have contributed to the success of our organization. We have made progress with various initiatives, and I look forward to serving as President in 2017.
