For years, Intrinsic Perennial Gardens, Inc. has been selecting for the darkest foliage and the reddest pigments that show up after the heat of summer in zones 3 to 9. Andropogon gerardii ‘Indian Warrior’ and ‘Rain Dance’ have darker green foliage and burgundy highlights that increase heading into cool fall weather. ‘Red October’ has red highlights almost all season long, except for the hottest part of summer. After the first frost or freeze, the plant can turn from burgundy to scarlet. ‘Dancing Wind’ has thinner green stems with sharply contrasting red highlights that turn to scarlet after cool nights. ‘Blackhawks,’ the newest variety, is the darkest yet, starting with deep green and purple and deepening to a near-black purple color in September. All these reliable native grasses are hardy and long-lived.
