When I visited Houweling’s Tomatoes in August, I was impressed on a number of levels — the automation and technology they use, how flavorful their tomatoes were, and how they’re embracing new energy sourcing by using CHP. I’ll admit, I was unfamiliar with CHP — combined heat and power — until I received Houweling’s invitation to attend its ribbon-cutting ceremony. The technology intrigued me, and I wanted to share its energy cost-cutting benefits with you. So take a few moments and read the cover story to learn more about this fascinating topic and hear from growers and a GE expert about how CHP works and what to consider if it’s something you want to explore. Additionally, I want to thank each of you for welcoming me to this industry over the past year and educating me about how your operations work. Your passion and enthusiasm inspires me, and it’s bittersweet to share that this is my last issue. I’ve accepted an opportunity to pursue my own passion by combining my faith with my profession as an editor for World Vision, a Christian humanitarian organization that works to make the world better for children. I’m sad to leave you all, but rest assured, I’m taking you with me. Recent years have been hard for this industry, and I’m constantly encouraged and amazed at how you press on and find new ways to grow your businesses, adapt to changing times and continue to succeed. It’s that resiliency and optimism, along with your dedication and determination, that will stay with me as I move on and start a new life 2,400 miles from where I am now. I hope you’ll continue to share your thoughts and feedback with our editorial team as they lead this magazine forward this year and continue our mission of helping you build the best greenhouse business operations possible. Thank you for all of your support and for welcoming me into your world. Best wishes for a successful 2013 and beyond.
