Coco Slabs
Developed by Dutch Plantin, the DP Optima double-layer coco slabs were found to require 10 to 20 percent less water and fertilizer feed than rock wool slabs of similar dimensions, while producing the same tomato yield during greenhouse trials carried out over the course of 2011. The slabs provide both financial and environmental benefits, as they can be disposed as low-cost compostable waste or used as fuel in bio-energy plants. Although water supply in North America is not usually an issue, less drainage means less water to be cleaned and decontaminated, resulting in smaller installations. It also means fewer waste nutrients seeping into the environment. READER SERVICE #58
LED Lighting
Philips GreenPower LED Production Module is available in an UL-approved 110-volt version in the U.S. The modules are available in deep red/blue (general light good for a variety of growing applications) and deep red/white (if work light is needed). Between 35 to 43 watts, the modules can replace many T5 or T8 grow light applications and reduce energy consumption. The Production Modules are being tested on ornamentals for day-length extension and photoperiodic manipulation. READER SERVICE #57
Herbicide
BioSafe Systems introduces AXXE Broad Spectrum Herbicide, an herbicidal soap that utilizes ammonium nonanoate. The active ingredient is National Organic Program (NOP) compliant and Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) listed for use in organic production. Formulated as a liquid concentrate, AXXE is mixed with water and is effective and economical for control of annual and perennial broadleaf weeds, as well as mosses, liverworts and lichens. It is made of natural fatty acids and works by “burning” the waxy cuticle of green vegetation, but will not move through soil to injure nearby plants. AXXE works within hours of application and produces no residue. READER SERVICE #59
