If you’re looking to grow a true red that consumers will love, particularly for landscaping, then the Sun Parasol Garden Crimson by Suntory Collection is a good place to start. This mandevilla is part of the Sun Parasol series, blooms to 4 inches in size, is compact with natural branching and is best for landscape uses. It can also be used for hanging baskets.
Production:
- Soil should be sufficiently free-draining but also water retentive.
- Maintain a pH level between 4 and 5.
- Keep temperature between 61°F and 68°F as it grows best in warmer temperatures. During the winter, the temperature shouldn’t drop below 50°F and the plant shouldn’t be too moist.
- Requires plenty of light during the summer and winter.
- Water sufficiently in the summer, but not too much during flowering. Too much watering can result in rapid growth and long shoots. Avoid root rot in the spring by watering sparingly during the winter.
- In addition to root rot, plants should be kept dry to avoid leaf spot, and fusarium and botrytis in the winter.
- A good compound fertilizer with adequate magnesium is recommended. Use 1 gram per liter/1 mS EC.
- When the plants are fairly well-rooted, top them to improve branching.
- Using Alar 3-4 gram/l and Cycocel less than 1cc/l is recommended to keep side shoots shorter. Do this weekly during the growing period. Avoid using growth retardants in the winter. Using Bonzi is not recommended, as it results in smaller flowers.
- Common pests are aphids, thrips, whiteflies, red spiders and mites.
