Earlier this year, the GIE Media Horticulture Group launched its Grower Radio Network, available for a free download through the Apple iTunes stores. For those with the app, you’ve no doubt noticed we’re populating it with podcasts featuring Cultivate’14 speakers. For example, The Ohio State University’s Claudio Pasian and Luis Canas recently shared their thoughts on lutheolentumpapyrophobia. If that leaves you scratching your head, it’s because the word was coined by the horticulture and entymology professors themselves, who combined three Latin and Greek words to arrive at the tongue-twister. The word combines Lutheo (from Latin), which means yellow; Lentum (from Latin), which means sticky; Papyro (from Latin), which means paper; and Phobia (from Greek), which means fear. In other words, it is the fear that many greenhouse growers have of yellow sticky cards. For more on this “malady” and what to do about it, tune in to GRN. And while you’re there, check out the following Cultivate’14 podcasts: • “Lean Flow for Growers” with FlowVision’s Gary Cortés. If you’re not practicing Lean in your operation, chances are your bottom line isn’t what it could be. Check it out. • “Are You a Fierce Competitor?” with The Harvest Group’s Bill Arman. Learn why and what growers must do to remain competitive in today’s business climate. • “Esssential Leadership Skills for Managers” with Carroll-Keller Group’s Darryl Harris. You may think you’re managing effectively, but are you? • “Update: Impatiens Downy Mildew” with Ann Chase, owner of Chase Agricultural Consulting, LLC (previously Chase Horticultural Research, Inc.), and professor emeritus of plant pathology for the University of Florida. Tune in for an update on the epidemiology and management of this disease scourge. And if you’re attending Cultivate’14 this month, you’re invited to stop by our podcast booth located in the Live for Growers Zone in the center corridor of the convention center where we will be conducting live interviews throughout the show. See you in Columbus. Joe Jancsurak, Editor | jjancsurak@gie.net |
