Muhlenbergia ‘Fast Forward’

A how-to production guide

Unlike the typical muhly grass that doesn’t begin blooming until late summer or early fall, Muhlenbergia capillaris ‘Fast Forward’ produces a beautiful show of flowers as early as August. Striking pink tiny blooms appear even earlier some years. The understory of broad, strap-like green leaves is attractive before, during and after the flower show. This U.S. native produces symmetrical, compact mounds and is refined in shape. ‘Fast Forward’ prefers sun to part shade and grows 24 to 30 inches tall, and up to 4 feet when in flower. It is hardy to Zones 6 to 10.

Production:

  • Plant one liner per trade gallon. Finish time is approximately 10 to 12 weeks for a 38-cell plug.
  • Use a loose, well-drained media that retains sufficient moisture and nutrients.
  • Maintain pH at 5.5 to 6.2 and electrical conductivity (EC) at 0.75-1.25 mS/cm using the 2:1 extraction method.
  • Grow plants at optimal temperatures of minimum 45°F nights and 65 to 85°F days.
  • This grass prefers high light levels. Provide full sun or more than 5,000 foot candles (fc).
  • No pinching is necessary.
  • Fertilize with 150 to 200 ppm liquid feed or 0.75 to 1 pound nitrogen per yard of slow release fertilizer.
  • ‘Fast Forward’ has average moisture needs. Allow soil to dry slightly between waterings.
