Every so often you find yourself in a really good place. For me, that place is as editor of the publication you’re reading. After two weeks on the job, it’s clear that GIE Media’s horticulture group, of which Greenhouse Management is an integral part, is made up of a dedicated and talented group of individuals. It’s also clear to me that the industry of which we’re a part is life-changing. From the breeders and suppliers of pesticides, fertilizers, and greenhouse systems, to the growers, horticulturists, and business owners, you’re helping to populate our world with amazing sources of beauty and food. But enough about you (kidding, of course), by way of background I am a career journalist who has covered a myriad of fields. Since I’m “green,” I will be relying on your knowledge and expertise to ensure Greenhouse Management continues delivering cutting-edge content to help move your businesses forward. In “Building a case for biopots” (page 16) by Kym Pokorny, research efforts behind developing the “ultimate” biocontainers are detailed. “Keep Track” (page 20) covers the benefits of sustainability certification. And in “Prescription for Plants” (page 26), Kelli Rodda, editor of Nursery Management, serves up some fascinating research on the healthful effects (mental and physical) of plants. Such research should be shared by growers. On the technical front, you’ll find a multistep approach for controlling Botrytis by Leanne Pundt (page 36); practical information on managing shore flies in “Plant Health” by Daniel Gilrein on (page 60); advice for controlling mosquitoes in “Growing Trends” by Julie P. Newman (page 62); and what you need to know about bench systems in “Tech Solutions” (page 63) by John Bartok. Turning to business management. Margie Holly discusses how to be a better motivator in her “Communications Director” article (page 52) and in “Pot Up a Winner” (page 42), Karen Varga, editor of Garden Center, a GM sister publication, presents creative container ideas from the California Spring Trials. Finally, please know that you’re always welcome to contact me with your comments at jjancsurak@gie.net, 216-236-5960. And on behalf of Greenhouse Management and GIE, best wishes for a blessed and happy holiday season. Joe Jancsurak, Editor | jjancsurak@gie.net |
