Scirpus pendulus ‘Stars and Stripes’ PPAF
This brightly variegated native bullrush looks very similar to a carex. Thin strap-like leaves, usually around 3/8 of an inch, or 1 centimeter, wide, have bright yellow centers with some streaking, both gold and green, within the strong green edges. Leaf length is 1 foot-plus. In July, butter yellow stems emerge 18 to 24 inches tall with star-like clusters at the tips. Prefers moist soil and full sun to part shade.
Sesleria x ‘Tiny Dancer’
Extra thin green foliage looks almost turf-like, but these small clumping plants only reach around 8 inches tall. Spring flowers are also smaller on short 12-inch stems, blooming in May and June. Perfect for smaller gardens and spaces or a mini-meadow. Full sun to part shade; most any soil.
Panicum virgatum ‘Dust in the Wind’ PPAF
Deep green foliage has tips of olive green to purple. Unlike many grasses, the coloration stays into summer and intensifies with autumn’s cool nights. That’s when reddish flowers appear on stiff stems up to 5 feet tall. By this time, the bulk of the plant takes on a chalky purple color. By the end, some orange brightens the top. Reaches height of 5 feet. Full sun; most any soil.
Pycnanthemum x ‘Smokey Mountain Mint’ PPAF
One of our most exciting new plants has a wide appeal to humans and pollinators as well. This hybrid incanum has a purple cast to the foliage below the silvered tips, and bract-like leaves surrounding the flower clusters at the tips of the long stems. These rhizomatous plants have hybrid vigor. Reaches height of 24 inches. Full sun; most any soil but wet.
