Spring production is not only one of the busiest times of the year but can also be the most difficult because of the wide variety of plant material in production and the numerous pests that can invade crops. Ensuring your plants are protected from propagation to shipping is essential for a successful season.
Aphids, thrips and whiteflies are often the most common and challenging insect pests ornamental growers face. There are multiple species of each, some of which are known to transmit plant viruses. These pests feed by using their mouthparts to extract the plant sap, affecting the overall vigor of plants. Prevention is critical to controlling these insect pests and stopping their damage before it negatively impacts the value of the crop.
Know what to look for
Aphids can often be found feeding in large groups on new growth, however they can also be found on stems, buds and lower leaves. This pest most commonly causes damage to crops by removing phloem sap during feeding and excreting honeydew as they feed, leading to black sooty mold.
Thrips are typically found feeding on plant flowers and other tender plant tissue such as young foliage and buds. They can also severely damage spring bedding plants by causing leaf stippling, scarring and distortion of flowers and foliage. Feeding injury is particularly noticeable on plant terminals, newly expanded leaves and flower petals.
When scouting for whiteflies, check the undersides of leaves for adults, nymphs and eggs. Damage caused by adult and immature whiteflies can result in:
- Reduced leaf expansion
- Chlorotic spots on the top sides of leaves
- Leaf discoloration/silvering
- Leaf loss
- Honeydew secretions that lead to black sooty mold
Defense that springs into action
Mainspring® GNL insecticide is a powerful tool from the diamide class of chemistry in IRAC Group 28 that can help prevent aphids, thrips, whiteflies and more from establishing and reaching damaging levels. It provides extended protection as a drench through systemic movement with 8-12 weeks of control or as a foliar spray applied on a 14-day interval. Mainspring GNL quickly paralyzes insects and they stop feeding, limiting disease transmission and unsightly damage to foliage and flowers. Depending on the target pest, maximum mortality can be achieved in 2-7 days.
