According to the 2020 USDA Floriculture Report, poinsettia sales in 2020 totaled $157 million — up 3% from 2019. Slotted into the potted flowering plants category by the USDA, poinsettias account for 18.4% of sales in that category.
The market for poinsettias continues to evolve, too. There is a growing demand for non-red varieties, as well as painted options and smaller options like princettias. The way poinsettias are developed is changing too, with some university trials (including North Carolina State’s, which had its last run in 2020) closing up shop and most of the trials being held by growers, including Plantpeddler, N.G. Heimos and Lucas Greenhouses.
Below, there’s information on the five biggest poinsettia producing states and trial results from Plantpeddler’s 2021 Variety Day. And, if you have your own insight into poinsettias, drop us a line at cmanning@gie.net — we’d love to hear from you. – Chris Manning
