State's inaugural Native Plant Month reaps benefits for green industry

Ohio launched the project to encourage consumers to plant native trees and for green companies to raise their profile.

April 2020 was Ohio's first official Ohio Native Plant Month, and, according to a May 11 press release from the Ohio Nursery & Landscape Association (ONLA), the organizers have built a platform for consumers to "learn about the plants that support our native bees, birds, butterflies, insects and Ohio wildlife."

In addition, according to ONLA, Ohio green-industry businesses are encouraged to be involved with the event and reap the benefits from that association; signing up is free and

The organization is tracking the number of native trees planted in Ohio in 2020 with a 100,000 Tree Challenge.

Currently, per the release, 90 Ohio native plant growers have signed up and are listed on the website.
