Terra Nova Nurseries announced a new collection of begonia varieties called the Begonia Cool Breeze Series. The series is one of the most economical foliage begonias to grow because of its tolerance to cool temperatures. These bold, exotic garden plants can be placed indoors, and can be grown successfully in cool greenhouses.

The series consists of four varieties:

Begonia ‘Cool Breeze Emerald’ is a medium-large begonia that has deep forest-green leaves, which are also quilted and velvety. The large, rounded palmate leaves have dark red leaf backs, and are supported by black-red stems. Late summer flowers are large and pink in showy clusters. It is shade-tolerant and performs best in Zones 10 and 11.

Begonia ‘Cool Breeze Pewter’ has broad oval leaves, casually fluted, pointed and ruffled that are held on a mounded, stout plant that has a quiet dignified presence. Satiny, pewter colored leaves are accented by a deep green heart, held in a snowflake pattern at the center of the leaf. It grows well in Zones 10 and 11 and requires fertile, rich soil.

Begonia ‘Cool Breeze Glacier’ is a very vigorous begonia that shows well in the spring or summer outside and especially in the winter indoors. An elegant house plant, it performs well in cooler home temperatures. It grows as a very round mound, perfect for a manicured patio pot, or as a neat garden plant. The leaves are very similar to its siblings, rounded and ruffled with a red back. With a finish time of four to six weeks, this begonia is best for Zones 10 and 11.

Similar to Begonia ‘Cool Breeze Pewter', Begonia ‘Cool Breeze Rouge' takes on a port wine glaze over its leaves as the heat climbs. It grows well in Zones 10 and 11 and is a good summer landscape plant. With slightly more leaves than 'Cool Breeze Pewter', it’s an even match in culture and care. Both are heat- and humidity-resistant, but are quite tolerant of cool weather.

Terra Nova Nurseries has created “Plant Profile” pages and “Grower Recipes” specific to these new varieties so growers interested in possible liner orders can learn about growing habits, plant characteristics, fertilization recommendations, water requirements, and other insights provided by the breeding team.
